Bio

June-Hao Hou is Assistant Professor at the Graduate Institute of Architecture, National Chiao Tung University, since February 2007. Before that he was Lecturer at the same school for 3 years. He received his Doctor of Design and Master of Design Studies from the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University. His advisor for doctoral research was Prof. Spiro N. Pollalis, and thesis committee members were Prof. Jeffrey Huang from GSD (now in EPFL), Prof. Ugo. O. Gagliardi from Computer Science at Harvard GSAS (retired) and Prof. William J. Mitchell from MIT. During the years in Harvard, he also worked in the Center for Design Informatics, GSD, as a senior researcher in digital media and assisting IS management.

Hou was born in Taitung city, a paradise of mountain and ocean located in the east coast of Taiwan, where he spent his childhood and teenage years. He moved to Taichung when admitted to the Feng-Yuan Senior High School. He learned everything about vintage computer in high school, including Apple II, MPF-II, BASIC and programming competitions. Since then, the spirit of hacking and team work became important parts of his professional life.

He persued undergraduate study in the Department of Applied Mathematics, NCTU, in 1988-1992. During this period, Hou joined the Computer Music Studio, led by Prof. Ting-Lien Wu, and participated in projects related to algorithmic composition and computer-aided performance. After receiving Master of Arts in Design in 1996 at the Institute of Applied Arts, NCTU, he became Adjunct Lecturer at IAA teaching fundamental classes in digital media and applications. At the same time, he paticipated in Prof. Yu-Tung Liu's projects in architecture and community development, and he was also a consultant & freelance designer in web design, visual design, and multimedia production.

Prof. Hou's primary research interest is in exploring bridging techologies and solutions among multiple discriplines by means of design. He has co-directed projects in digital archival of cultural heritage and envisioning future architectural spaces. Currently he is directing a project in designing devices and services for medication of chronic patients, from the perspectives of architectural design. He teaches classes in new media design and applications, including Fundamentals of New Media, Parametric Surfaces (mathematics and design), Information Architeture (information design and interactive architecture) and more.
